What does Independence represent?
When I was a little girl, September was a month we would prepare for with anticipation. I remember I was a drum majorette in parades for a couple of years. Other two years I was a flag student. My grandparents would never miss the grand parade in which the most prestigious schools participated. Those definitely were good old days.
However, patriotism has not faded. The problem is that our country is submerged in other many matters. For instance violence, the high cost of life, corruption and more.
As patriot citizens, we do not love our country less than what we should. The sad thing is we are afraid an disappointed of how those matters affect our country and the lack of interest on behalf of the government. Perhaps not only the government, but also other interested parties.
Well, one thing I know for sure is I love my country and it really means a lot to me. Every morning I wake up and thank God for this country and pray for our government representatives, for all the good citizens who try their best with the work of their hands and good will. That is what independence represents to me. The opportunity of living in a country where I can plant dreams and cultivate them with effort, for me and my future generations. With the hope that our nation one day will really be free!

Hi.
ReplyDeleteI love my country, but for me September is an another normal month in the year. I don´t stand why the people buy flags and patriotic thigs in this specific month, because for me, we have to be patriotics every day of the years and of course remember when we were free and work very hard every day for that, not only in our jobs but also creating values to our children and family whit our own example.
But for me is not patriotic the people who run behind a torch and the same people strip bags of plastic in the street and stop the traffic only for run (one day) I don´t understand why the scholl promote that also is very dangerous for the kids, I think there are thousands of ways to be patriotic. The firts rule is always be nice to your fellow and help if you can.
Conclusion, I try to be a good citizen and do my best effort to make a mark in my country.
For me Independence is a political act that in it´s moment represented only in papers that Guatemala began to be free of the orders of the Spanish and colonaizers. But through the years, decades and centuries, thath reality changed.
ReplyDeleteSince those years we celebrate, but I feel more comfortable with the word commemorate, that day, in many ways. Some of them are parades, that used to be in a military way. But nowadays there are many celebrations, like talent contests betwen publics schools, band contest, marimba concerts, and of course the famouses torches all this week, sepecialy. I agree with Sergio, because it became dangerous to the runners, in our traffic conditions.
I think we are patriots all year long, doing well our jobs, helping others, be punctual in our works, be conscious in every thing we do, paying our taxes, demand to the goverment that they do what they have to do, and oversee what are they doing, and report when they aren´t doing well his job, but the most important is to participate, to be informed and to have criteria, for the next elections.
My family are of Quetzaltenango and my husband is from Jalapa, in both cities, they celebrate the fair on September 15th, so until 5 years ago for me this dates represented to travel to one of the fairs, and it was happy.
My family has always celebrated this month. My mom is a teacher so every year has organized the race with the torch. My brothers always place large flags in front of the house and in their cars. I have not been so patriotic but I feel good that there are people who show their patriotism. In the same way that all of we have a month to celebrate our anniversary, the country has a day and I think it is good to continue prommoting this celebration. Of course everyone must give our best to make a better country. But why do not celebrate? I like the events, special fair and food of this month.
ReplyDeleteFor me independece activities remember whe I was a kid, we marched for a long road holdding a flag, I never liked those kind of activities. In these days represent trafic, is anoying the people don't considerate the time of other citizens, running "for freedom" but is difficult to understand how these activities give us freedom.
ReplyDeleteI prefer that Goverment made activities that commemorate and remember how and why we fighted for freedom. And working for be a good citizen, thinking about the good common.
Like's karla said I paid my taxies to, I hope that one day Govement use them from properly. If we don't contribute for a better country we will never see it. I prefer in September the citizens remmeber whats means independence, and work for become an a better citizens every day.
How about you?

What do you like the most about September?
For me, september is a month very Stressful so, I like the vacation that I have in this day because I can relax a little, and of course, I can enjoy the diferent activities that the people make in these days.
Independence for me represents and means a lot, when I was a child a used to do a lot of activities at the school, I remember we sang, we made representations to commemorate independence, kids played drums and a other musical instruments also I loved to eat typical food like chuchitos, tacos, etc.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I don't like about september fifteen is the traffic caused by the people who like to run with the torch, because people gets very stressed everyone drives very savage and it's too dangerous for everyone even to the people who like to run, it's a real chaos but what I suggest is that the government should look for a place where the people can run and do it freely outside the city to prevent and avoid traffic.
