End of Level Blog

Dear Pioneers,

These six months, approximately 20 Saturdays, have been a very exciting journey. Learning something different along the way. How have you felt being exposed to English in a new way?
I'd really love to know you insights about this time you have invested in learning English.
I can tell you that I feel blessed for the opportunity of meeting and teaching such wonderful people. I can personally confess that I learned a lot from you. I feel happy to complete this phase, and it is very important for me to know what this experience has left you.
You must share four paragraphs that will include:
  1. A comment on your initial SWOT (Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats)
  2. The best practices in the class and how they helped you improve.
  3. The new topics you learned and how you applied them.
  4. Last, write a personal thought about the best way to learn a language.
Thank you dear Pioneers. By the way, I got inspired by the song, however I am pretty sure we'll see each other very soon.

  1. What a nice song! It really makes me cry. And I agree with the lyric of the song: I don't wanna say goodbye either. That is why I encourage all of you to continue. Never give up!

  2. My end-of-semester words to my pioneers mates (By Herber Urrutia)

When I decided to study English again I never imagined how so good the course would be. The first thing we did was to introduce to ourselves, of course. After that, since the beginning our teacher asked us to write about our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. So I wrote my personal SWOT and my action plan. As time has been passing by I have noticed I have accomplished most of my main purposes: (S) I improved my reading habits, (W) I improved partialy my hearing skills, which is still my main weakness, (O) I am doing a better use of e-learning and I am practicing my English by helping my children in their homework (elementary level: 1st and 2nd grades), and finaly (T) I am still fighting with my major problem: procastination, but I am sure that at the end I will win; in fact, winning this battle is one of my life goals.

Some of the best practices in the class were: Our teacher pushed us up to speak in English all the time and visiting other classes and interact with other students in the sense of practicing with them what we were learning in our own class. That was an exciting experience because it challenged us to prepare us more.

The topics that most caught my attention were reduction and linking in spoken English. They were so important because I realized why I was not able to understand to native English speakers. Now I am paying more attention to this matter.

After almost six months of being attending English classes on Saturdays I come to the conclusion that if you want to speak English you have to learn to listening it before you speaking it, and that grammar comes after.

See you, teacher and classmates, on the following course.

    1. Identifying every single area in the SWOT is very useful. It helps you create an action plan to focus on those areas specifically. I am glad you were able to address those areas. I totally agree with you, before speaking, a lot of input is necessary. The more you listen, the better you speak. Thank you very much for your comments, and for sharing your learning experience. Remember that we never stop learning. The journey of knowledge is a long one indeed. Take good care and continue studying with the same energy and interest you have done with until now. Here's a quote for you to add to your list: "Try to learn something about everything and everything about something." Thomas Huxley

  3. Hi! I confess that the last time I practiced my english was in 2003 at school, I forgot totally my english but this course was very special for me, it has been
very important for me. I really need to improve my speaking, but I`m trying to do my better. I already can watch movies in english, netflix its very good, In sometimes that I dont understand I active the subtitles. I really need to start speaking with my wife, she is very good in english.

In this course I really appreciate every activities, blogs, reading activities, I think with this activities I learned a lot. Betzi you rock, Im surprised about everything you know about technology and you know a lot of things about other subjects.

I learned several things about grammar structures, but I really apreciatte when you correct me for my pronunciation. I also learned new vocabulary. Im getting used to practice at my conversation.

I think the best way to learn is to immerse in the idiom, tv + reading + speaking and practice, practice and practice! I hope Im in a good way!

    1. It has really been a long time since the last time you studied English. But my friend, you know what they say: Practice makes masters! And I think it is true. Of course practicing with your wife is going to help you a lot. Take advantage of that. Remember that everything and everyone around us becomes a resource when it comes to learning. I strongly believe that the best way to learn is by doing what you like doing. Watching movies is a fun way. I remember that movies in English were the first resource I was exposed to and I didn't have a clue of what the movie was about. Thank you for being open to correction and feedback. We learn from mistakes, and mistakes are a proof that we are progressing because we are exploring different grammar structures. I motivate you to continue. Make learning English a habit, and in no time you will find it as a need. You will develop a passion to learn the language and to use it. Thank you for your nice comments, students like Pioneers motivate teachers like me.
