Have you tried it?

Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM)

We've discussed about illnesses and injuries. We also learned about First Aid. In this post I would like to share about CAM. Have you ever heard about it? Well CAM is a field that encloses different types of therapies, not necessarily medical. You can read about the different therapies or techniques here. I can tell you that my grandmother was very fond of herbal medicine. She believed that there's a cure for ailments in nature. She would prepare special teas for different conditions. Chamomile to reduce pain, mint and garlic for infections, pericon for stomachaches, you name it. She would also buy pills made of different herbs. As for injuries, aloe vera was her number one remedy.

  1. My experience with CAM (by Herber Urrutia)

I’ve heard CAM has helped a lot of people and I believe that’s true but it is not my case. Many years ago I suffered a traffic accident which injured my back. Two or three years after that I suffered another one which injured my knees. So I went to the doctor and he gave me some medicines as well as physiotherapy to help to restore my health. That helped me but it did not cure me. As I continued feeling pain in my back and knees I went to visit a chiropractor who made me some kind of massage and gave me some medicines to reduce my pain. However, after a few days I noticed my pain got worse, mainly in my knees. A year has passed by since that chiropractor touched my body and I think he did a bad practice. Maybe I should tried acupuncture. Despite of my bad experience I still believe in CAM.

    1. Oh! How sad! I wonder why that chiropractor didn't help you at all. Did you have constant sessions? Let me share with you that my mom also suffered an accident. She almost lost her right leg. The doctors told her she would never walk. God definitely made a miracle. The thing is that she walked again. A good friend of hers was a chiropractor, and was able to support her along the process. Thank God and her friend my mom was able to walk again!

    2. In my family we normally don't use CAM, but that doesn't mean thats it does`t work. My grandmother is a 96 years old person, when she was little she lived in a village in Coatepeque, she also is a "comadrona" and gave us a receipt for stomachaches that she learned a few years ago.
You need to broil water with some cinnamon sticks add pericon, chamomile and some mint, you will have a delicious and useful tea.

Also when you get heart in a muscle or bone you can use "lienzos" with cold and hot water to feel better, and some vinegar to get best results.

    3. In fact I just had one session because of my job. However, I think that chiropractor was more interested in my money than in helping me. Although I could be wrong on my appreciation.

Good for your mother Betzy, maybe you can give the cell phone of your mother's chiropractor.

On the other hand, it seems to me that Fernando's grandmother receipt for stomachaches is very good.

  3. I've been very interested reading your posts. I think CAM and chemical medicine are great options but not for everything. For some illnesses such infections chemical medicine like antibiotics are very efficient, but for other illnesses such simple headache a CAM option could be great. It reminds me one of my grandmother's recipe, she loved to use it to avoid headache. She was used to boiling water, an onion and honey to prepare a very delicious tea. Although that my first experience drinking my grandma's tea was so wear because I was afraid of the onion's flavor, it was a challenge that later made me feel really happy, the flavor was quite delicious and my headache just disappear. I agree Fernando's comment CAM options could be delicious but also I agree what Herber said, not always works as we need.
